Manchester Metropolitan University has launched a degree course in Food Business Entrepreneurship, unveiling the pioneering course at the University’s Manchester Food Heroes – Keep It Local conference.
Manchester is home to a diverse and vibrant food industry and the new degree, which starts in September 2015 has been developed by the University’s Hollings Faculty. It will offer students an in-depth understanding of a newly developing, varied food scene and help them develop into creative, innovative and responsible entrepreneurs.
The fully integrated degree will give practical experience, training including academic learning to those who have aspirations to set up their own food business or want to develop a career as an artisan food producer, organic food producer or food buyer within the food retailing industry.
Amanda White, Programme Leader for the Food Business Entrepreneurship degree course, said: “We are passionate about this new honours degree and believe we have the right ingredients to help students hit the ground running on a new exciting career as food entrepreneurs.”
Sustainable food business practices, local food and culture
Professor John Swarbrooke, Head of the Department of Food and Tourism Management, said: “I’m delighted that we are hosting this conference introducing our pioneering new degree to students from 6th forms and colleges from across the country. This is a distinctive course as it combines current thinking around sustainable food business practices, local food and culture.
“The day offers a good insight as to what the degree will offer as well as an engaging panel debate with special guests.”
The degree has been co-created with leading food businesses and food entrepreneurs. Students will receive master classes from leading industry practitioners and develop their own ‘real’ business ideas in partnership with food thought leaders, campaigners, innovators and entrepreneurs.
The conference has been organised with the support of Level 5 Events Management students from MMU, Drawing Board Events.
