IHG signs two hotels in Manchester

By James Russell: IHG signs two hotels in Manchester

February 25, 2015

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced the signing of two further hotels for Manchester, continuing the growth of its UK estate. The Crowne Plaza  Manchester – Oxford Road and Staybridge Suites Manchester – Oxford Road properties are being built as part of The University of Manchester‘s £1 billion campus development.

The 210-room Crowne Plaza hotel and the 116-room Staybridge Suitesproperty will both operate under a franchise agreement with existing owner partner M&L Hospitality and will be managed by Cycas Hospitality. The properties are both due to open towards the end of 2016.  M&L Hospitality is taking a 125-year lease on land owned by The University of Manchester for the 326-key new-build hotel complex.

The two hotels are part of Bruntwood’s wider redevelopment of Manchester Business School (MBS) and will adjoin its new two-storey Executive Education Centre, which will provide a new home for the business school’s corporate leadership and management programmes.

Located within close proximity to Manchester city centre, visitors to MBS and the University, along with long-stay corporate business clients, will be the hotels’ major demand drivers.

Manchester a key city for IHG

Philip Lassman, Director of Development for the UK & Ireland, IHG commented: “We’re delighted to be developing more hotels with M&L Hospitality.  Manchester is a key city for us and it’s great to see an appetite for our extended stay brand Staybridge Suites here.  Crowne Plaza Manchester – Oxford Road will be our third Crowne Plaza hotel in Manchester; and the brand – with its renowned meeting facilities and focus on supporting people who travel for success – is really gaining momentum across the UK.”

High end accommodation for visitors

Professor Fiona Devine, Head of MBS, said: “In our 50th anniversary year I am delighted that the development of the hotels and our new Executive Education Centre is progressing so well.  Our aim is to provide high end accommodation that will have wider benefits for visitors to The University of Manchester, the city and region. The Staybridge Suites hotel in particular offers a range of benefits to our Executive Education and Global MBA delegates who are often in Manchester for extended periods. Offering longer stays means guests can combine business trips with leisure and are able to visit Manchester and other areas in the North West.”

The opening of Crowne Plaza Manchester – Oxford Road and Staybridge Suites Manchester – Oxford Road will take IHG’s portfolio of hotels to 21 in Manchester. IHG’s broader family of nine brands in nearly 100 countries meets the needs of guests, whatever the occasion – whether an overnight getaway, a business trip, a family celebration or a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  All IHG hotels participate in IHG’s guest loyalty programme, IHG® Rewards Club which is the industry’s first and largest guest loyalty programme with over 82 million members.  It is free to join at www.IHGRewardsClub.com.
