The Argyll Hotel, Inveraray, designed by renowned architect John Adam, and one of the most historic hotels on the west coast of Scotland, has been put on the market, with selling agent Colliers International inviting offers around £1,500,000 plus VAT for the 36-bedroom hotel.
An Historic Scotland Category A-listed building, the hotel has a prominent location on the shores of Loch Fyne, in the heart of Inveraray, which is widely regarded as a model 18th-century new town. The Argyll Hotel, built in the 1750s by the Duke of Argyll for visiting officials to Inveraray Castle, also features two bars, restaurant, two function/meeting rooms, in addition to staff accommodation.
It is believed that seasoned traveller and writer, Dr Johnson, stayed at the Argyll Hotel on his 1773 visit to Inveraray. Unusually for him, he enthused about the area, describing its castle and the “total defiance of expense”, while adding, “There are not many places where you can see a designer made castle, designer made grounds and bridge and a designer made town for good measure. I would say idyllic sums it up.”
