Curiously Kentish Deli/Café opens in Birchington-on-Sea

By James Russell: Curiously Kentish Deli/Café opens in Birchington-on-Sea

January 22, 2015

Jason Freedman the owner of the award-winning Minnis Bar & Restaurant in Birchington, Kent, and his head chef Kevin Faux have opened the Curiously Kentish Delicatessen and Café.

The move is in response to fans of the sea front restaurant wanting to buy the home cured produce for which it is renowned.  In addition to selling its own salted, smoked, brined and pickled meats, fish and seafood plus salads, deli accompaniments, sauces, Curiously Kentish will also sell the best artisan foods produced in Kent, including cheese, pasta, rice, sauces, speciality oils, vinegars, syrups, herbs and a host of delicatessen fine foods.

Open all day

Set on the former Café Bee site, the new venture is also open all day for breakfast and lunch, snacks or just coffee.

“We will have daily changing soups,  a special ‘traiteur’ lunch dish of the day and will also be preparing ‘ready meals’ to take away and re-heat at home, which will be pre announced, to allow advanced meal planning,” said Jason.

The typical traiteur dish is Slow Cooked Confit Duck Leg and Curiously Kentish Treacle Cured Bacon, with Sauerkraut, Sweet Buttered Carrots, Parsley Potatoes and Duck Jus, which with a glass of wine or soft drink cost just £10.

One night each month Jason and Kevin will be hosting the ‘Freedman and Faux Supper Club’, when the pair will create impromptu dishes as the mood takes them, with fresh, seasonal ingredients, which with only four tables, promise to be sell out, intimate affairs.

Relish South East Restaurant Recipe Book

The Minnis has been selected as one of the county’s top dining destinations that will represent the best of Kent in the new edition of the new Relish South Eastcookbook.  The glossy, 420 page saddle-stitched, hard back edition of Relish South East will devote 10 pages to The Minnis and costs £20.

The book will be launched at Ockenden Manor on 26th January and will bring together the region’s leading lights and some of the most talented chefs in the country.
