The Home Secretary, Rt Hon Theresa May (MP for Maidenhead) has met the team at Maidenhead Central Travelodge to learn about how the company is creating jobs, developing careers and bringing visitors to the area.
Mrs May met the company’s Chief Executive Peter Gowers, along with the Hotel Manager for Maidenhead Central Travelodge, Kay Duff, and her team of 20 staff and was given a tour of the newly refurbished hotel.
This brand investment is part of a £57 million nationwide programme that the company is currently undertaking as part of its strategy to build a new Travelodge that is Britain’s favourite hotel for value.
One of the busiest
Maidenhead Travelodge is one of the company’s busiest hotels for business customers, driven by the number of multinational organisations in the town and immediate area. Thanks to its central location, in 2014 the hotel has enjoyed a busy year of trading, seeing a double digit increase in sales.
During the visit, Mrs May spent time with the hotel team learning about their career progression at Travelodge. The discussion included the hotel manager, Kay Duff telling the Home Secretary how she moved from a customer services advisor role into a management position.
Mrs May was also introduced to Hayley Adams, a member of the Travelodge team who recently graduated from the company’s JuMP (Junior Management Programme), the UK’s first budget hotel management apprenticeship programme for school leavers. Hayley is an Assistant Hotel Manager and has been identified as one of the company’s future leaders, having also completed the company’s fast track to management programme called GEM (Gaining Entry to Management) earlier this year, a scheme which has seen over 400 people graduate into management positions.
At the meeting, Mrs May also discussed the impact of Crossrail, which will be located just across the road from the hotel, and how to unlock the true potential of the British tourism industry to help create jobs and boost the local and British economy.
