Opened on 1 November 2014, St Mary’s Inn is located on the site of what was formerly St Mary’s hospital, 2 miles west of Stannington village in Northumberland.
With a £1.5m investment creating 40 new jobs, the pub – which is part of the Jesmond Dene House family – is housed in what used to be the administration building of the hospital and will be the central focus of a new community with 250 homes being built by Bellway,
Set in acres of countryside and only 10 minutes from the A1 and 20 minutes north of Newcastle upon Tyne, St Mary’s Inn will have tradition at its heart with warmth and generosity whether you eat, drink or stay. There will be a number of drinking and snug areas by the bar which will serve a selection of real ales from local breweries in addition to the pub’s own ale St Mary’s Ale which has been brewed especially by local brewery Wylam Brewery. There will then be five dining areas offering good pub food as well as afternoon tea and Sunday lunch and a private room for up to 20 guests.
Eleven bedrooms
St Mary’s will have 11 large and spacious ensuite bedrooms with queen or king beds– including one with disabled access – which are all located on the first floor. Each will have its own identity and will be fitted with furniture sourced from around the country and there will be a private rooftop suntrap courtyard for guests to enjoy. The bed heads are designed by Scottish borders Blacksmith and Sculptor in iron Stan Pike. Guests will be able to enjoy all the aspects of comfort and hospitality in the relaxing environment of a country pub.
Head Chef Shaun Hurrell was originally with Jesmond Dene House when the hotel first opened 9 years ago but for the past five years has been working in London with Marcus Wareing at The Berkley and Fergus Henderson at The St John Chinatown Restaurant and Hotel before returning to the north east to open St Mary’s Inn. His team will produce food which will be simple but great quality pub food using local suppliers and made in-house where possible.
General Manager Victor Castro-Quiroga – an ‘adopted geordie’ originally from Chile – says “We want to create something very special when we open St Mary’s Inn. A brand new pub with its own character and personality. Something distinct and different, but something that people can totally relate to, and where dining or staying will be a relaxed, informal and friendly experience to savour”.
