Pipers Corner School selects Pelican’s Piranha™ to comply with food allergen legislation

By James Russell: Pipers Corner School selects Pelican’s Piranha™ to comply with food allergen legislation

November 7, 2014

Piranha provides allergen data to help organisations meet new allergen labelling rules that come into force in December 2014

Pelican Procurement Services, the procurement and supply chain management specialist, has today announced that Pipers Corner School in High Wycombe has selected its Piranha™ cloud-based system to access food allergen information for all the dishes it serves to students, in advance of the new legislation that commences on 13 December 2014.

The independent school for girls has signed-up to Piranha; a free system that not only offers allergen and nutritional information, but also has the ability to accurately cost menu dishes and track price changes. Using live invoice data Piranha helps catering teams manage their food pricing and control budgets.

Commenting on the school’s decision to select Piranha, Richard Caldicott, catering manager for Pipers Corner School said: “With the new allergen labelling legislation coming into force at the end of the year, we have been looking at ways of accessing this information to ensure we are fully compliant.  Pelican’s Piranha system was the best choice for us as we can easily build our menu items into the system, including details of how each dish is made.  Allergen information is then instantly available, along with nutritional content.  We plan to print off the details and display them in the dining area so everyone can see exactly what is in each dish, the nutritional values and any potential allergens.”

Pelican is working with suppliers to access the allergen details of all food products, as well as basic nutritional information. This includes calories, fat, salt and sugar content, as well as Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) information for men, women and children.

Adds Richard Caldicott: “By using Piranha, we are now fully prepared for the new rulings, plus it gives people more insight into exactly what is in the dishes we make. Today, people like to know what has gone into their food, the ingredients used and how healthy the dish is for them. We are now in a position to provide this to them every day for every dish we serve, which offers real peace of mind to everyone who uses our facilities.”

Shabaz Mohammed, Managing Director of Pelican Procurement Services said: “Time is running out for organisations to prepare themselves for the forthcoming allergen labelling legislation.  We launched Piranha to help support our customers in accessing the data they need to comply with the new rules. We are proud to be supporting Pipers Corner School in this regard and also in being able to offer the added advantage of delivering nutritional content data. The Piranha system is free to use for all Pelican customers and so we urge operators to trial the system now, so you are ready for when the new legislation comes into force next month.”

From 13 December 2014, the Food Information for Consumers Regulation legislation commences, which requires any operation that provides food to the public to be able to provide details of any allergens contained within a dish, on request.  A financial penalty will apply if the new legislation is not adhered to.
