Landmark coaching inn brought to market

By James Russell: Landmark coaching inn brought to market

November 17, 2014

Christie + Co has been instructed to sell The Salwey Arms, an iconic 18th century Georgian coaching inn in Wooferton, Shropshire.

Situated just off the A49 on one of the main gateways to Shropshire, the Grade II listed character inn offers Bistro style dining in a range of beautiful dining rooms, a separate generously stocked bar, function room for up to 80 guests and five luxury letting rooms.

The substantial detached building was redundant for a number of years until it was acquired by the current owners, Hugo and Cilla Lywood, in 2012. It was then extensively renovated to meet modern requirements, while retaining the property’s core and beautiful original features.

An outstanding feature of The Salwey is the well-appointed owner’s accommodation which comprises a lounge area, modern kitchen, dining room, two double bedrooms, a box room and a family bathroom.

Paul Reilly of Christie + Co’s Birmingham office, who is handling the sale, believes the owner’s accommodation possesses scope for further development: “The current owner’s accommodation could be developed to provide another three en-suite letting rooms and there is a two storey store to the rear which could be converted into a manager/further letting apartment.”

He adds: “Salwey Arms is well supported by local residents and also attracts drinkers and diners from a nearby 32-bedroom motel that offers no breakfast or hot meals. The business has also earned a reputation as an attractive wedding venue; its large garden with seating for 120 covers is often used as a marquee area for weddings and parties.”

Christie + Co is seeking offers of £1,250,000 for freehold interest in the property.
