Ampersand tees up Golf Museum contract at St Andrews

By James Russell: Ampersand tees up Golf Museum contract at St Andrews

November 19, 2014

Ampersand – which offers bespoke catering and impeccable service for iconic British venues – has built on its reputation as a caterer-of-choice for museums with its appointment to open the first café at the British Golf Museum in St Andrews. Development is already underway and will be completed in time for the golfing world’s showpiece event – the 144th Open Championship to be held at St Andrews from 16 July 2015.

The architecturally stunning new café is being added to the upper level of the museum and will provide commanding views of The Royal and Ancient Clubhouse, the 1st tee of the legendary Old Course, and a panorama of the West Sands beach.  It has been designed by the award-winning Architect, Richard Murphy, as part of a major refurbishment to the building that houses the world’s most comprehensive collection dedicated to golf’s history.

The café will have 78 covers indoors and a further 60 outside on an adjoining terrace that overlooks the Bandstand, and offers superb views of the ocean.  Its menu will celebrate Scottish cuisine produced by local suppliers, and will comprise counter service for barista coffee, cakes and snacks; with hot meals served at table.

The contract is projected initially to turnover £450k and upwards annually – initially for three years, with the option of a two year extension. Given the spectacular location and design of the new facility there is an opportunity to develop standalone events in the evening and out of museum opening hours.

Angela Howe, Director of the British Golf Museum, said: “The café extension and redesign of the museum entrance, reception and shop is a new chapter in the museum’s history. It is the most significant development to take place since the museum opened in 1990. Ampersand’s track record with museums and its commitment to source produce locally were important in influencing our decision”.
