W London celebrates The Glamour of Leicester Square

By James Russell: W London celebrates The Glamour of Leicester Square

October 3, 2014

From the meeting of the vivacious Marilyn Monroe and Queen Elizabeth II, to Carlo Ponti stealing a kiss with the beautiful Sophia Loren, and Liz Hurley stepping out in that legendary safety pin dress, the history of Leicester Square is filled with landmark moments that have given onlookers a window into the glamour, spectacle and secrets of the world of cinema.

The Glamour of Leicester Square

To celebrate this rich heritage and the indelible link between Leicester Square and film history and culture, W London – Leicester Square is set to publish The Glamour of Leicester Square. This luxury coffee table book draws together a collection of rarely-seen images of some of the most iconic stars of film and popular culture gracing the red carpets and premieres from 1925 to the present day. Alongside dazzling images of Leicester Square’s buildings and billboards through the ages, the book charts the area’s creation, transformation and more recent regeneration.

Each turn of the page reveals another photographic treasure from cinematic history on the square. Captured in stunning detail, these create a rich visual memoir of the area and its most enchanting moments. Alongside each photograph readers will find anecdotes that elucidate the story behind each scene and the faces within it, and how they contributed to Leicester Square’s fascinating history.

W London – Leicester Square

Opened in 2011, W London – Leicester Square has always been proud of the area’s rich and diverse history and the association between cinema and Leicester Square that continues to this day. Speaking about the book Coen Van Niersen, W London’s General Manager, said:

“W London is a passionate supporter of film and creating this book is the perfect way to celebrate the influence that the movies have had on both the area of Leicester Square and the hotel. Our aim is to offer our guests and readers an insider glimpse into the intertwined history of the world’s most esteemed stars of cinema and popular culture and the home of cinema in Britain.

“The past few months have been incredibly exciting; we have relished the opportunity to uncover these images and create a visual history of Leicester Square to share with the world. The photographic gems featured in this book each depict the most glamorous and captivating moments that have taken place on the square.”

The Glamour of Leicester Square will be available to purchase from W Hotels The Store online from October 2014 for £35.
