Liverpool’s Giant Spectacular generates £46m for city

By James Russell: Liverpool’s Giant Spectacular generates £46m for city

October 24, 2014

In an independent study commissioned this week by Liverpool City Council, it was revealed that the Memories of August 1914 showcase in July of this year played an important role in the city’s calendar – as well as helping to create business for a host of Liverpool tourism attractions including Liverpool One, the Albert Dock and the Museum of Liverpool.

Members of the Liverpool Hoteliers Association now believe that as a result of the varied arts, culture and sporting events, Liverpool will maintain its prominent stance as a top UK tourist destination.

Executive committee member of Liverpool Hoteliers Association, Steven Hesketh said: “The Giant Spectacular brought a huge amount of trade into the city, whereby a staggering boost to Liverpool’s economy was witnessed over the five days.

“Due to the increased footfall, hotels across the city centre and surrounding areas had extremely high residency levels. It was also apparent that many hotel guests that had travelled from overseas explored the city’s other attractions, which was a key factor in securing the economic surge.”

Since 2008, hotels across the city have seen an impressive 153% rise in the number of holiday trips – consequently Liverpool is currently ranked as the 11th most popular UK holiday destination.

Steven added: “In order to continue our appeal as a major tourist destination, I believe that it’s vital for Liverpool to hold between two and four big hitting events per year. A highlight of mine this year was when Liverpool hosted the start of the Tour of Britain. I personally think that sport is one area that we could push to continue maximising the city’s economy.”
