One of the country’s leading beer experts will be making a special appearance at this year’s Celtic Beer Festival, held at St Austell Brewery.
Roger Protz is one of the best known names in the world of beer, and as well as writing more than 20 books on the subject he has edited 20 editions of the Good Beer Guide and contributed to publications including the Guardian, the Independent, the Publican’s Morning Advertiser and What’s Brewing.
Roger will be at St Austell Brewery’s Celtic Beer Festival on Saturday 22 November, giving ale lovers a chance to discuss the finer points of their favourite brews with him, as well as signing copies of his latest book, Britain’s Beer Revolution, which was co-authored with Adrian Tierney-Jones, another of the UK’s leading beer writers.
The pair have combined their knowledge and passion to track the rise of independent breweries in recent years, with biographies of some of the key players in British brewing, including St Austell Brewery.
Roger Protzsaid: “It was a daunting and challenging assignment, with close to 1,400 breweries operating in Britain we have to strike a balance between the longer standing breweries and the new breed of smaller breweries. Adrian and I are both big fans of St Austell Brewery and Proper Job actually features in the promo video for the book – Adrian likens its aromatic fruitiness to Carmen Miranda’s hat, and it’s one of our favourite ales.
“I’m looking forward to attending the Celtic Beer Festival, which is one of the highlights of the year for beer lovers. It will be a great chance to sample some new ales and meet some fellow beer connoisseurs. If anyone would like a copy of Britain’s Beer Revolution, it will be on sale at the festival and I’ll be more than happy to sign copies.”
Celtic Beer Festival
St Austell’s Celtic Beer Festival will feature more than 130 different ales, stouts and lagers and will see up to 3,000 people entering the ancient cellars of the Victorian brewery building.
The festival runs from 11am until 11pm with live music and entertainment throughout the day. Alongside St Austell Brewery’s own award winning beers, including Tribute, Proper Job and Korev Lager, there will be up to 20 new and limited edition ales brewed by the St Austell team just for the festival.
Tickets for the Celtic Beer Festival are available on the door on the festival day only, and cost £10 per person with all profits donated to the St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust. This includes entry to the festival, a commemorative pint glass, festival programme, and two half-pint beer tokens.
The festival is only open to over 18s and will operate a strict Challenge 25 policy so if you look younger than 25, you will be asked to provide photographic ID such as a driving licence or passport.
Beer tokens are on sale costing £1.75 per half pint, £3.50 per pint or £10 for three pints.
