Scotch Egg Challenge 2014: who will egg-cel?

By James Russell: Scotch Egg Challenge 2014: who will egg-cel?

September 18, 2014

Back for its fourth year and set to be more eggs-traordinary than ever, on Tuesday 16 September contestants will take to the kitchens at The Ship, Wandsworth once again for the pub’s annual Scotch Egg Challenge.

Judged by a panel including The Guardian’s Bob Granleese and Catherine Hanly from Hot Dinners, while journalist and author Joe Warwick comperes the evening, chefs from 16 UK venues will fight to have their Scotch egg crowned the best in the country.

Free to attend, from 7.30pm fans of the once humble bar snack can flock to the famous riverside pub to scramble for a spot nearest the action and a chance to sample the eggy creations.  Expect cutting-edge concoctions using everything from sausage meat to salt cod béchamel and eggs from gulls to quails.

Previous winners include last year’s victor The British Larder in Suffolk, which wowed the judges with its stunning smoked venison Scotch egg (pictured top) and in 2013 Bladebone Inn in Berkshire was triumphant with its entry made with duck egg, truffle layer and a potato and Parma ham breadcrumb.
