Cathedral Refectory set to be the Pride of Winchester

By James Russell: Cathedral Refectory set to be the Pride of Winchester

September 17, 2014

Winchester Cathedral has awarded a substantial restaurant and event catering contract to caterer Kudos, who already hold contracts with similarly acclaimed venues such as The Central Hall, Westminster and The Royal Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa.

The 3-year deal which commenced with a soft opening earlier this month will see Kudos introduce an exciting, modern and sustainable approach to the onsite catering facilities. All proceeds to the Cathedral from the catering operation will continue to support its mission and ministry for the future.

300,000 visitors per year

Winchester Cathedral, in the heart of Hampshire and which welcomes over 300,000 visitors every year, is nationally and internationally admired for its architecture and heritage, and fondly associated with a number of historical characters including English romantic fictional novelist, Jane Austen. The Cathedral attracts tourists and families all year round. It is home to one of the most popular Christmas Markets in the UK and other major events such as its Flower Festival, held once every other year, to all of which Kudos will be bringing their flair.

The Cathedral Refectory

The Cathedral Refectory, with its award-winning contemporary design, is one of Winchester’s hidden gems, sheltered behind an ancient flint wall and with unrivalled views of the Cathedral itself. It is an excellent place for friends of all ages to meet for coffee, lunch or afternoon tea and Kudos will also be encouraging more wedding, meeting and event catering in a Summer marquee and a permanent banqueting suite.

As part of the contract, Kudos will make substantial investment to develop and improve the facilities. The new look – which it is intended will be launched in the New Year – will provide visitors and local residents alike with exciting and innovative new offers including Summer Suppers in the courtyard; homemade ‘estate brand’ gourmet foods such as rhubarb jam and homemade piccalilli; and a homemade all day bakery.

Good reasons to keep visiting the Cathedral

Jon Pryce, Managing Director of Kudos said “We’re really excited about the new partnership. We’ve fully embraced the ethos of the Cathedral and we’ll be working closely with the community supporting local suppliers, charities and residents. Our aim is to try and balance the rich heritage of the Cathedral with the more modern and contemporary Refectory space and give visitors and residents plenty of good reasons to keep visiting the Cathedral.”
