By James Russell: Millennium Copthorne and Douwe Egberts launch M & C Barista competition

August 4, 2014

The quality of coffee provided to guests and customers is becoming ever more important. It may not be quite as important as free WiFi in hotels, but it’s getting there!

Now, in a development that reflects that importance, Douwe Egberts Professional has partnered with the Millennium Copthorne Hotel Group to offers its employees a chance to win the ‘Barista of the Year’ accolade. The competition, will invite baristas from the across the M&C UK group to demonstrate their coffee making skills as well as well as their creative flair by creating a personal signature drink.

Three regional heats covering the North, South and London will take place to help identify the top two baristas in each region. In each heat, candidates will be asked to prepare three drinks for each member of the judging panel including a cappuccino; espresso and the signature hot drink of each candidate’s choice. Six regional finalists will then battle it out again in front of the panel of expert judges who will choose one winner based on their performance on the day of the final.

The winner, will not only walk away with the prestigious title of ‘Barista of the Year’ but will win £500 in holiday vouchers plus the opportunity to add their chosen signature beverage to the hot drinks menu across the entire Millennium Copthorne estate.

Speaking about the competition, Martyn Bell, Marketing Manager for Douwe Egberts Professional said: “We’re delighted to support the Millennium Copthorne Group and to identify and reward their hard working baristas with this exciting opportunity. The judges will be looking, in particular, for great preparation and flair, presentation, aroma, taste and consistency as well as machine operation and maintenance.”

As part of the competition, candidates will also be asked to create a new, signature drink with the winner’s creation set to be added to the hot beverages menu across the entire estate.

Baristas will be reviewed and short listed by a panel of judges including senior members of the management teamfrom the Millennium Copthorne Group, as well as Master Baristas from Douwe Egberts.
