If bed-making was a sport in this year’s Commonwealth Games, Aberdeen’s Megan Hutton would be challenging for a gold medal! In a competition which saw all hotels in the Thistle chain take part in an inter-company hosting challenge, Megan was crowned the hotel giant’s best bed maker.
In a two part challenge, teams from each of the 35 nationwide based hotels competed in the ghl Mini Iron Man and Radical Hosting Gauntlet Challenge. Participants in the latter were asked to re-wire and reassemble a table lamp, make a single bed, and pour and serve a gin and tonic, all to the Thistle brand standards.
Megan is a member of the house keeping team at the city centre Caledonian by Thistle. Each hotel entered a team of three in the glh Mini Iron Man Challenge, with competitors facing a 50 metre open water swim, a 5 kilometre stationary cycle and an 800 metre run. The event was held in London, using some venues which hosted events during the 2012 Olympics.
Two of Thistle’s Aberdeen hotels made the podium in the sporting challenge, with Audrey Fabourg from Altens finishing third in the swim and Pedro Diez from the Caledonian finishing second in the run.
The Mini Iron Man competition provided a fitting warm-up for Thistle’s Lite@Nite nationwide relay which is now underway. The challenge, which raises money for children’s charities, involves a baton being passed between all of Thistle hotels in the UK by running, swimming and cycling.
Alison Christie, general manager of Thistle Aberdeen Airport, believes the company-wide colleague participation event is a fantastic way to motivate staff. She says, “We are always striving for best practise and the Radical Hosting Gauntlet and the Mini Iron Man competition helps to show how important these standards are to us, and why it is so important that our staff continue to challenge themselves, which will ultimately provide a better experience for our guests.
“The health and fitness of our staff is really important to us, so to encourage them to take part in this Mini Iron Man event in such a fun environment is brilliant, and it has encouraged more staff to take part in our Lite@Nite event, which will raise a significant amount of money for charity.”
