Students at Marlborough School in Sidcup, Kent have a tool to help them communicate thanks to an iPad donated by Harrison Catering Services, which delivers the school’s food service.
Marlborough School is a secondary special school which caters for students with severe, complex and physical learning difficulties. It uses a special app, Proloquo2Go, developed by AssistiveWare, to help its students tell the catering staff what they would like to eat for lunch. The app shows the daily lunch menu with pictures so that students can make their selections by touching the screen.
Communicating effectively, developing confidence
Bill Graney, Senior Manager Client Services for Harrison, said: “Our Catering Manager Lyn Giles approached our directors with the idea of Harrison donating an iPad. When I visited the school and saw the app in action, it was clear what a useful tool this is for the students to help them communicate effectively and develop their confidence. We’re delighted to be able to support this important initiative and to help make this technology available for even more of Marlborough’s students to use.”
Headteacher Linda Lee said: “We are absolutely delighted that Harrison have chosen to support Marlborough School through this very kind donation. We are thrilled with the progress that the students are making in their communication and independence skills through the use of new technology and value very highly the support from the Harrison school catering staff who have been an integral part of this special Marlborough initiative.”
Marlborough School is one of 57 primary and special educational needs schools across the London Borough of Bexley where Harrison provides the catering. The company has achieved the Soil Association’s Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark, which recognises food providers who prepare meals using fresh, seasonal ingredients, providing reassurance that the food Harrison serves meets high standards of traceability, freshness and provenance.
