A historic detached inn and restaurant, situated in the ‘considerable’ shadow of one of Britain’s more controversial landmarks, is for sale with specialist property adviser Christie + Co.
The Royal Oak is situated in Cerne Abbas, near Dorchester in Dorset — regarded as one of the most desirable villages in Britain. It has a population of around 800 and is the scene for a 13th century church and Benedictine Abbey.
In addition to the bar and restaurant — which serves traditional pub fayre to complement a selection of local real ales and good wines — the business comes with five-bedroom owners’ accommodation.
It trades as a local inn and destination food business, with trade drawn from local towns and villages — and boosted by the influx of tourists and visitors during the year.
Most visitors come to the region to see Cerne’s notorious chalk giant — a hill figure carved into the turf, carrying a club and sporting what may be politely described as a ‘particularly outstanding bodily feature’.
Yet, while the Cerne Abbas Giant is now thought by the majority of modern scholars to have been created in the 17th century, the Royal Oak is more historic still — dating from 546.
