At the company’s annual conference last week, JW Lees reported a record turnover of £62.8 million for the financial year ending 31 March 2014, and announced ambitious plans for further growth. The company is clearly one to watch over the coming years as it seeks dramatic growth across its business.
Successful family business
JW Lees has maintained its position as a leading family business in the North West, despite challenging economic conditions, and successes achieved over the last year at the family-run brewery, include a year-on-year increase of turnover of six per cent, from £59.2m in the previous financial year.
Investment and expansion plan
JW Lees also announced an investment plan of £67.5m in opening 65 pubs across the North West region, potentially creating 1,000 jobs for the local area.
Over the next five years, JW Lees is committed to driving total volume sales of £100 million and continuing its profitable balance within the business of Managed Houses, Tenancies and Free Trade. To achieve this, JW Lees is committed to 15 per cent annual growth over the next five years.
Profit share scheme
JW Lees also announced the introduction of a profit share scheme for its 1,100 employees who work across its breweries, pubs and head office. The profit share scheme recognises the important role JW Lees’ staff play in the future success of the company.
William Lees – Jones, Managing Director and the sixth generation of the family to take the reins, said:
“It is paramount that we continue to put our people at the heart of our business because to achieve our plans we need to create 1,000 new jobs to serve our guests in our pubs and drive the business. Having Jim Sullivan (the internationally renowned motivational speaker) here from the USA today to share his expertise on leadership and training endorses our message that we are putting our money where our mouth is, since colleagues and guest experiences are our most important asset in achieving our goals.
Speaking about the conference, Jim Sullivan commented:
“JW Lees offering a profit share, attainable to every team member in the business, focuses each person on either serving their customer or supporting those colleagues that do. I am impressed that JW Lees has taken a market leading stance and is recognising hard workers, from shop to top floor – this should be a benchmark for all businesses in the UK pub sector.”
