Busy university restaurant revitalised

By James Russell: Busy university restaurant revitalised

June 4, 2014

A family-run design company is top of the class after revamping a busy dining space at a North East university.

The team at Restaurant Design Associates Ltd (RDA), based in Hebburn, South Tyneside, were appointed by Northumbria University to provide a brand new look for Castles Restaurant, one of the university’s main dining spaces for students, staff and visitors, situated within the Ellison Building in the heart of Newcastle city centre.

The 200 seat capacity restaurant on the City Campus sees up to 8,000 people pass through its doors each month during term time.

The university also has a further 16 catering and retail outlets across its City and Coach Lane campuses.

RDA, who specialise in the catering, hospitality and retail industries, provided a full turnkey operation including design, procurement and installation as part of the major refurbishment to revitalise the ageing facility.

The project is the latest in a line of successful projects for the family firm, which was set up by directors Roy and Judith Addyman in 2007. The couple turned over £1million in their first year of business and have since rapidly acquired a range of contracts across the UK – including a continually growing presence in the higher education sector.

Quality and value in student catering facilities

Stephen Rochester, project manager at RDA, said: “Today’s students, many of whom have large loans, look for high quality and value in all areas of their university life, including their catering facilities – and we have a team who are highly experienced in bringing design ideas for university campuses to life.

“At Castles Restaurant, which is such a busy destination throughout the year, we knew the importance of delivering a bright, airy, modern, inviting environment for students to spend time in, and we’re thrilled to see our vision come to fruition.”

RDA also recently completed work at Coventry University, where the team installed Costa Coffee and Starbucks outlets, and the firm is currently working on a range of university catering projects across the UK.
