Punch responds to wine trends

By James Russell: Punch responds to wine trends

May 29, 2014

Punch Taverns have launched a new wine brochure in response to the growth of sales in the category and Punch Partner demand.

The annual wine brochure, launched on 26 May, responds to a change in growth areas and now features an expanded range of champagne and sparkling wines as well as many new on-trade exclusives.

Popularity of Wine of the Month scheme

To further the support for the wine category, Punch has also seen growing popularity in its Wine of the Month scheme, with over 850 participating pubs.

Punch Taverns’ John Healy, Commercial Director, said: “The industry has seen a two per cent growth in champagne and sparkling wine as well as calls for single serve bottles. We have responded to this and are offering them to our Partners as it is important that they have breadth in choice and can cater to their customers’ demands.

“We also find that on-trade exclusives are a big sales driver for pubs as they act as a point of difference for customers. Over 70 per cent of our collection now features on-trade exclusives and we believe this will help our pubs stand out by offering quality and choice.

“Equally, we have also seen an increase in popularity for Chilean wine and where certain brands have proved favourable in our wine scheme, we have introduced others within that brand.

Growing category

“Wine is an increasingly growing category for us and almost a quarter of the Punch estate are participating in the Punch Wine of the Month scheme. One of the reasons why it continues to grow in popularity is because is remains competitive and is non-committal so remains flexible for our Partners.”
