May 15, 2014

Two Sparkling wines from the South of England have been awarded with International Wine Challenge trophies in a record year of success for English wine makers at the competition.

Nyrtimber 2009 Classic Cuvée

West Sussex-based Nyetimber was awarded the top national prize when its 2009 Classic Cuvée received the English Sparkling trophy. This sparkling wine is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier which wowed the IWC judging panel, and is available nationwide including through Ocado and Majestic Wines.

Winning a national trophy means this wine will be shortlisted for the Champion Sparkling Trophy, which is announced at the IWC Awards Dinner on Wednesday 16th July.

2012 Camel Valley Pinot Noir Rosé Brut

Having been awarded two Gold medals by the IWC, Cornish vineyard Camel Valley was also awarded the English Sparkling Rosé trophy for its 2012 Camel Valley Pinot Noir Rosé Brut. Created from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, this light pink Rosé is available from many independent wine merchants as well as Amazon and Great Western Wines.

Gold medals

In a record year of success for English Sparkling wines in the competition, five English Sparkling wines were awarded Gold medals. In addition to its trophy winning wine, Camel Valley also received a Gold medal for its 2009 Chardonnay. Gusbourne Estate in Kent was awarded Gold for its 2009 Brut Reserve, and Sussex vineyard Breaky Bottom also picked up Gold for its 2010 Breaky Bottom Cuvée Reservé Brut.

The Champion wines across Red, White, Sparkling, Fortified and Sweet will be announced at the International Wine Challenge Awards Dinner on Wednesday 16th July at Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.

Charles Metcalfe, Co-Chairman of the IWC commented:

“It is wonderful to see our English winemakers show their star quality at this year’s competition. We have never awarded two English Sparkling wines with trophies before, which just goes to show the calibre of these exquisite wines. These English Sparkling wines are perfect for a special occasion and are punching well above their weight a quality for price ratio. If you have never tried English Sparkling wine before, I recommend you make every effort toget your hands on one of these trophy winners. You will not be disappointed.”
