Specialist caterer, Vacherin, has been named Runner Up in the Sustainable Food category at the Sustainable City Awards 2014 held last week at the Mansion House in the City of London.

The awards, accredited by the RSA as the UK’s foremost green business award scheme, attracted entries from over 250 diverse organisations from across the UK including The Clink, Nomura, Bradford City Council, the Zoological Society of London, Schroeders and HSBC.

Sustainability initiatives and achievements

Vacherin was the only contract caterer to be shortlisted in this year’s awards and its entry focussed on its activities and achievements in increasing the sustainability of its food offer.  Initiatives like reduction and elimination of packaging, 75% of their operations now using on-site water purification systems, local sourcing, and healthy food promotions and campaigns, for example.

Phil Roker, Commercial Director for Vacherin said, “These really are flagship awards for sustainability across all industries in the UK and we were delighted to have even been shortlisted. To then get the Runner Up award on the night was a feather in our cap when we were up against organisations with such well known sustainability credentials as The Clink and Wahaca.

“Sustainability is a key element of how we have always run Vacherin. To be recognised for this is wonderful for the company and our team, who work very hard on driving our sustainability.”

Awards are given across 12 categories (one being the Sustainable Food Award), which between them represent the three pillars of sustainable development; the economy, society and the environment.

The Sustainable Food Award winner was The Castle Climbing Centre in London.
