Thousands of private and business travellers worldwide begin their day with a hearty breakfast from the hotel buffet but this cost is not always included in the room price: according to the international breakfast analysis of hotel solutions provider HRS, the culinary service is paid extra in two out of three hotels.
UK breakfasts are fifth most expensive
In comparison with the average extra costs of 10.32 Euro per breakfast, hotel guests in the UK get the first meal of the day for a rather expensive average price of £11.60 (13.91 Euro).
In Singapore (the nationwide average price is 16.86 Euro), in Switzerland (16.05 Euro) and in Belgium (15.05 Euro), guests pay the most for their breakfast. However, in Latvia (8.14 Euro), Finland (7.64 Euro) and in Poland (6.40 Euro), travellers appease their hunger in the morning for a particularly affordable price.
Jon West, Managing Director of HRS in the UK, outlines the following: “At HRS, we place real importance on transparency, and as such, travellers can view in the hotel list whether breakfast is included in the price or if it is charged as an extra. Breakfasts are also rated by guests, which provides further information when it comes to choosing a hotel.”
The more stars, the more expensive is the breakfast
HRS’ analysis also revealed that in all countries surveyed, breakfast is most expensive in five-star hotels, but guests can typically choose from a wider range of food and drinks..
Breakfast for early risers
According to a previous eResult study commissioned by HRS, one in seven business travellers (14.3 per cent) request an “Early Bird” breakfast service which is served prior to the regular breakfast hours, which they are willing to pay extra for. Business hotels are often particularly eager to meet the special needs of their guests; at least 15.8 per cent of the hotels registered with HRS offer an Early Bird Breakfast.
