New Barcode Thermometer Steals the Show

By James Russell: New Barcode Thermometer Steals the Show

April 3, 2014

A new-look Bluetooth Barcode thermometer stole the show for TM Electronics at Foodex 2014. The UK-based thermometer manufacturer reported a surge in interest for the company’s improved barcode method of testing and recording food temperatures, with many new enquiries in particular from supermarkets, restaurants, bakers and butchers.

Temperature Alarms

Visitors to TME’s stand were particularly impressed by the MM7000’s new alarm feature which allows users to programme all their instruments with high or low alarm values, giving them the tools they need to take instant action on out of temperature incidents, rather than only receiving alerts after the event – perfect for improving due diligence on food safety.

How does it work?

The MM7000 allows users to set their own critical alarm values indicating a Low and High alarm for every food item or appliance and this is linked to a unique barcode. When the temperature is taken, the device automatically scans the barcode and displays an instant signal so that remedial action can be quickly taken. The device also records the actual temperature, together with the time and date of each test, and for complete due diligence the unique serial number of the device itself. The device is supplied with its own open-source software to download the information using its own Bluetooth capability.

Why use barcodes?

  • Barcodes can be displayed on any product, appliance, test point or ‘menu’.
  • Barcodes can be generated easily using standard software and print fonts;
  • Barcodes can be 100% bespoke – better than arbitrary, pre-set product descriptions;
  • Barcodes capture data immediately – a much faster option than scrolling through countless pre-set product descriptions.

Who benefits?

  • Supermarkets – an invaluable early warning of a failing cold store or rotisserie oven as well as tracking the actual temperature of every fresh or frozen food item on display.
  • Restaurants – chefs and caterers can respond far more quickly to potentially unsafe food temperatures when taking deliveries, regenerating meals or during cooking.
  • Food manufacturers – identify and track critical temperatures during all kinds of processing, including in-oven testing, to make spoilt batches a thing of the past.

MD, Tom Sensier: “The MM7000 definitely stole the show for us. Food businesses are some of the most regulated there are, so it’s no surprise that  many of our visitors were impressed with the MM7000’s considerable potential for improved due diligence whilst offering a very flexible and practical solution.”
