West Cornwall Pasty Co’s ‘traditional’ pasty was crowned the best at this weekend’s annual Eden Project’s World Pasty Championship.
Beating off stiff competition (from over 150 entrants), the popular ‘traditional’ pasty from the UK’s largest specialist retailer of premium Cornish pasties wowed the 30 judges, who were made up of local dignitaries, foodies and representatives from the industry.
Passionate about provenance, West Cornwall Pasty Co.’s ‘traditional’ is crammed with only the finest ingredients including the very best farm-fresh potatoes, swedes and onions with beef sourced from the British Isles and the Republic of Ireland.
PGI guidelines
Each entry into the Cornish Pasty category had to comply with the PGI guidelines, which include that they must be D-Shaped, crimped on one side (never on top) and made in Cornwall. Professional bakers, keen amateurs and juniors were also winners at the ‘Oggy Olympics’, which saw thousands of pasty enthusiasts show up to celebrate Cornwall’s most famous food export.
West Cornwall Pasty Co.’s baking partners, WC Rowe who are based in Penryn, were also triumphant at the competition with two development chefs winning in their professional categories. Hosted by TV personality Dick Sawbridge, the event is supported by the Cornish Pasty Association.
