PoundPub to offer half pint for a quid

By James Russell: PoundPub to offer half pint for a quid

March 25, 2014

The Independent reports that PoundPub – a discount pub offering a half of lager for a quid and a pint for £1.50 – is about to join the ranks of the ‘no frills’ retailers in Stockton-on-Tees.

The first will open on the site of existing pub Georgia Browns in Stockton-on-Tees, Co Durham under the slogan “more round for your pound”, and will be followed by a pub in Atherton, Greater Manchester, where the discount pricing policy has already been tested – leading to a transformation of its business.

Opposition from alcohol awareness campaigners

Alcohol awareness campaigners are opposed, pointing out that drink is already too cheap and available from supermarkets for as little as 40p a can.

However, Mike Wardell, director of the pubco chain Here for Your Hospitality Ltd, said the development was not designed to encourage drunkenness but to return to the traditional concept of a pub.

With some estimates pointing to over 20 pub closures every week, pubs need to attract and retain customers in order to survive – but it remains to be seen whether costs cut to the bone (no Sky Sports) and heavily discounted beer brands will prove sufficiently attractive in the long-term.
