Poppy’s Place opens in Fulham

By James Russell: Poppy’s Place opens in Fulham

March 27, 2014

Poppy’s Place, a new address for all-day dining in Fulham, has opened its doors and is the first venture from the young team of restaurateur and consultant Scarlett Guess and Chef Alastair Prichard.

It offers a farm-to-table menu of seasonal breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes by day, and by night, transforms itself into a candlelit neighbourhood restaurant serving robust British flavours with a focus on steak.

Alastair Prichard, an experienced young chef who runs West London catering company Alastair David, takes the helm in the kitchen. Business partner Scarlett Guess, who has experience running her family’s restaurant, the St James’ stalwart Rowley’s on Jermyn Street, and has consulted on a number of restaurant projects, manages the restaurant.

Starts with an extensive breakfast menu

The Poppy’s Place day begins with an extensive breakfast menu covering the full range from a quick croissant and a cup of Workshop Coffee to hearty English breakfasts and brunch dishes such as Hash browns and hot smoked salmon with horseradish crème fraîche. There are thick slices of sourdough bread for guests to toast for themselves at the table, served with Poppy’s own-made jams and marmalade, with freshly squeezed juice and smoothies and White Russians at the weekend.

Lunch at Poppy’s Place is a local fixture thanks to a special ‘toastie’ menu featuring classics such as Grilled ham and cheese with mustard, alongside Beetroot, cheddar, spinach and red onion. There is also a regularly changing choice of soups and salads as well as delicious sandwiches on artisan bread, for example Salt beef, gherkin and sweet mustard, or Prawn, lime and cucumber mayo. The day’s selection of cakes, freshly baked in the pastry kitchen at Poppy’s Place, might include Gypsy tart, Banana bread and Chocolate slab, all handsomely displayed in a glass counter for guests to make their choice to eat-in or takeaway.

From café to restaurant

In the evening Poppy’s Place undergoes its transformation from cafe to restaurant, offering a menu of small plates for example Endive with celeriac and ham remoulade; Beetroot, squash, goats’ cheese and croutons with orange dressing, alongside daily changing specials and steaks. Steaks, sourced direct from Lake District farmers, are served with salads, homemade condiments and unlimited chips. The day’s specials might include Grilled market fish with olive oil mash and gremolata, or Gratin of kale and Stichelton with soufflé potatoes. For pudding, there could be Honeycomb ice cream, Flourless chocolate cake with yoghurt sorbet or Neal’s Yard cheeses.

Home-from-home environment

The unique look of Poppy’s Place, a home-from-home environment rich in atmosphere and style, has been created by Nicola Harding Design. The light-filled, panelled room is furnished with an eclectic mix of vintage furniture and quirky lighting. Low lighting, candles and elegant tableware will transform the cosy space into an inviting restaurant.
