Historic award-winning restaurant in Harlech for sale

By James Russell: Historic award-winning restaurant in Harlech for sale

March 12, 2014

Castle Cottage, the award-winning restaurant with rooms in Harlech, North Wales, is for sale with specialist property adviser Christie + Co.

The 5-Star business, housed in two 16th century buildings, overlooks Harlech Castle — a World Heritage site – and has seven luxuriously-appointed rooms whose décor is in the style of understated luxury. To counterbalance the character of the 400-year-old buildings, the furnishings and fittings are modern, sleek and contemporary.

The accommodation affords the ideal base for exploring the delights of the region — in addition to Harlech Castle. Snowdonia National Park, the Ffestiniog Railway and the village of Portmerion, made famous by the enigmatic 1960s TV show The Prisoner, are all close by.

St David’s, one of Wales best championship golf courses, is also nearby — guests at Castle Cottage receive a ten per cent discount on green fees.

Premier restaurant

Castle Cottage is established as one of Wales’ premier restaurants, as well as being voted amongst the top 100 restaurants in Britain in the National Restaurant Awards. The dining room seats up to 40, with guests enjoying a seasonally-adjusted menu of the finest local produce.

Illustrious history

Castle Cottage has an illustrious past and, as a public house/coaching inn called the Red Lion was run in the 17th and 18th century by various members of the Anwyl family. The Anwyls of Harlech descended from the Anwyls of Parc, Llanfrothen — a family which claimed descent from Gruffydd ap Cynon, king of North Wales.

Keith Stringer, Associate Director of Christie + Co in Manchester, is handling the sale. He says: “During the past 25 years, Castle Cottage has grown, developed, and been upgraded under the stewardship of Glyn and Jacqueline Roberts. Now, after a quarter of a century, the Roberts’ are looking forward to a well-earned retirement.

“Their legacy is a high-quality, award-winning and profitable business, for which we expect to generate exceptional interest.”

Christie + Co is seeking £750,000 for the freehold interest in Castle Cottage.
