Northcote Hotel and Restaurant – Blackburn, shortlisted in the Medium Projects category

The catering Equipment Distributors Association (CEDA) has announced the companies shortlisted this year for its Grand prix Awards covering Large, Medium and Small Projects, as well as Outstanding Customer Service.

The Grand Prix Award winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the CEDA Conference on April 4th at the St George’s Park Hotel, Burton upon Trent.

Large Projects
Member Airedale  Catering Equipment Ltd
Project The Printworks – Leeds
Client Leeds City College
Brief Design, supply and install a complete catering and hospitality production facilities for a new Vocational Training Centre.
Notable features Airedale were an integral part of the design team involved in the strategic review establishing the educational programme to be delivered by the college.
Judges comment The complexity and scale of the project made it a prime candidate for the shortlist
Member Catering Design Group 
Project New Food Hall, Coffee Shop and Dishwash facility – London
Client Lloyds of London
Brief Initially to design the facility on a consultancy basis and then to supply and install the project
Notable features CGD had to work for three separate clients, Lloyds of London (the building occupier), Elior (the caterer) and Spie Matthew Hall (the contractor)
Judges comment There was added difficulty as this project had to be carried out whilst the building was in everyday use throughout the tight contract period.
Member Caterware Ltd 
Project Refurbishment of Catering and Hospitality Areas Etihad Stadium – Manchester
Client Manchester City Football Club
Brief To work with the Consultant Executive Chef, the in house Maintenance and Infrastructure departments and the newly appointed caterers to review and refurbish all the catering and hospitality areas.
Notable features The budget dictated that existing equipment had to be reused wherever possible and therefore specifications had to be flexible to ensure that the money was spent in the most important areas
Judges comment The original programme was tight but made more difficult due to a delayed start caused by a Robbie Williams concert and an earlier than planned finish due to a fixture rearrangement.
 
Medium Projects   
Member C&C Catering Equipment
Project Northcote Hotel and Restaurant – Blackburn
Client Northcote
Brief Design, develop, supply, project manage and install for a new build kitchen
Notable features The reputation of the hotel was founded on quality and attention to detail and C&C had to work to the highest standards of a Michelin starred chef
Judges comment C&C had to work round the clock to ensure that a complicated installation was completed to very high standards within two weeks
 
Member CHR Food Service Equipment Ltd
Project Manchester House – Tower 12 – Manchester
Client Living Ventures Restaurants Ltd
Brief Design supply, install and commission a fine dining restaurant on level 2 and a reception bar lounge and kitchen on level 12 of the building.
Notable features The project called for a sustainable approach and over 80% of the equipment was manufactured in the UK and 70% within 35 miles of the site.
Judges comment The chef had an eye on achieving a Michelin star so CHR had to deliver a design that would match that ambition.
 
Member Catering Design Group
Project London South Bank University – Main Refectory
Client Elior
Brief Redesign a tired and congested catering facility to provide a contemporary, vibrant and inspirational catering facility.
Notable features Whilst Elior were the client, CDG had to ensure that the University were happy with the designs as well as the caterer.
Judges comment CDG were faced with a budget of 50% of what was required for the original agreed design and still had to deliver customer satisfaction.
 
Member Court Catering Equipment
Project The Sign of the Don – London
Client Bleeding Heart Restaurants
Brief Design, project manage, supply and install a new catering facility in an old building
Notable features Court was asked to incorporate a GTS Waste system in to the clients other restaurant which was adjacent and to incorporate the new restaurant.
Judges comment Court had to cope with more than their fair share of difficulty both in designing and installing this project.
 
Member Inox Equip Ltd
Project Aaron Court – Leicester
Client Abbey Healthcare
Brief Design, project manage, supply and install a high quality catering facility for an upmarket care home.
Notable features The project included a laundry installation as well as the catering facility.
Judges comment The client strives to lead the market in residential health care and Inox Equip had to be more than equal to their demands.
 
Member Inox Equip Ltd
Project Cafés at The New Library of Birmingham
Client Amadeus Catering
Brief Work with the caterer to design, project manage, supply and install two cafés.
Notable features Inox Equip had to help the caterer develop and establish a new brand that will eventually be rolled out in other locations.
Judges comment The building was described as a people’s palace and the café designs had to sit comfortably within the overall ambience.
 
Small Projects
Member Chiller Box Ltd
Project Boopshi’s Restaurant – London
Client Robson Brothers
Brief Design, project manage, supply, install and commission a new kitchen as part of the total refurbishment of a building to create a modern restaurant.
Notable features The physical constraints within the building meant that all equipment had to be delivered through a first floor window.
Judges comment Chiller Box had to overcome access problems by scheduling all deliveries between 5.30 and 7.00am
 
Member Catering Design Group
Project The Wheatsheaf – Farnham
Client Red Mist Leisure
Brief Design, project manage, supply and install a complete pub catering facility including dining areas.
Notable features The client wanted the pub to fit their brand identity and also fit in with the requirements of the local community.
Judges comment CDG did a lot of local research to ensure that the interior reflected local interest including reference to J M Barrie who wrote Peter Pan in Farnham.
 
Member TAG Catering Equipment
Project Kaspers Restaurant and Bar – London
Client The Savoy Hotel Ltd
Brief Design, project manage and install a high quality fish restaurant
Notable features The client wanted customers to be able to select their own fish and watch it being prepared.
Judges comment TAG were brought into the project quite late in the programme and had only 8 weeks from initial briefing to the opening.
 
Member CHR Food Service Ltd
Project Development Kitchen – Lomeshay Lancashire
Client Wellocks Ltd
Brief Design, project manage, supply and install a development kitchen and dining facility for this top ingredient provider.
Notable features Whilst the kitchen would be used for product development, it would also be used to show customers what could be done with the product.
Judges comment As the clients customers include most Michelin starred chefs, the equipment had to be in keeping with these standards.

Project L’Enclume – Cartmel Lancashire
Client Simon Rogan
Brief Design, project manage, supply and install the new kitchen for this top restaurant
Notable features Existing equipment and materials had to be reused wherever possible.
Judges comment CHR were presented with an extremely tight programme and ended up working 24/7.
 
Member CNG Foodservice Equipment Ltd
Project Peace and Loaf – Newcastle
Client Bob Arora and Dave Coulson
Brief Design, project manage, supply and install a kitchen for new exclusive restaurant.
Notable features The menu included several intricate dishes that required a high level of technical cooking and temperature control.
Judges comment CNG were able to convince the chef to opt for an all electric open kitchen with a bespoke suite.
 
Member Vision Commercial Kitchens
Project Spuds and Berries Farm Shop Café  – Selby
Client Spuds and Berries Farm Shop
Brief Design, project manage, supply and install a kitchen to create a new café.
Notable features The kitchen was to use produce that was on sale in the farm shop to encourage customers to buy more.
Judges comment The client had a clear idea of what she wanted to achieve which Vision understood and were able to fulfil.
 
Member CNG Foodservice Equipment Ltd
Project The Orangery Finishing Kitchen – Darlington
Client Rockliffe Hall Hotel
Brief Design, supply, project manage and install an operational kitchen and preparation facility
Notable features The project was to replace an inadequate installation with a comprehensive facility within a very difficult location.
Judges comment CNG were approached at the eleventh hour and still managed to meet the client’s demands and programme.
 
Outstanding Customer Service
Member CHR Food Service Equipment Ltd
Project Emirates Old Trafford Pavilion – Manchester
Client Lancashire County Cricket Club
Brief To design and install the club’s Pavilion kitchen facilities
Notable features A long term project transforming the  food service operation to cater for today’s multi function requirements
Judges comment This is an excellent example of building a long term  customer relationship by providing a continuous high level of service
 
Member Catering Design Group
Project Salford Hospital Café and Restaurant
Client Salford Hospital
Brief Design and refurbish an existing café in 4 days
Notable features The brief included décor as well as equipment
Judges comment The timescales were unprecedented, but CDG achieved total client satisfaction.
 
Member Airedale Catering Equipment Ltd
Project Caerphilly Schools 2013 fit out programme
Client Caerphilly Borough Council
Brief Design and refurbish twelve school catering facilities
Notable features The work included stripping out down to bare shells before refinishing refitting.
Judges comment The timescales in some projects were very short but Airedale completed all on time and within budget.
