February 27, 2014

Pub operator JD Wetherspoon is to start building work on its first pub in the Republic of Ireland on March 3, developing the former Tonic Bar in Temple Road, Carysfort Avenue, Blackrock.

The pub, to be named The ThreeTun Tavern, is set to open on Tuesday 8 July, and Wetherspoon is investing 1.5 million euros developing the site, making a total investment of 3 million euros, including the purchase.

The Three Tun Tavern will create 60 full and part time jobs.

It will be managed by John Hartigan who has worked for Wetherspoon for the past 13 years and is currently the manager at one of its pubs in London. Born in Kerry and raised in Dartry, John has worked in England for the past 30 years.

He said: “I am delighted to be returning to Blackrock to manage Wetherspoon’s first pub in the Republic of Ireland.

“I am excited by the prospect of managing its first pub here and am confident that The Three Tun Tavern will prove popular with people of all ages and that it will act as a catalyst for other businesses to invest in the area.”
