Roux Brew – Michel Roux Jr launches beer competition for London’s brewers

By James Russell: Roux Brew – Michel Roux Jr launches beer competition for London’s brewers

February 24, 2014

Michel Roux Jr, Albert Roux and Head Sommelier at Le Gavroche David Galetti will next week be taking the first steps towards discovering a fine British craft beer good enough to carry the Roux name.

Roux Brew – special summertime ‘house beer’

16 top London breweries will be entering a competition to to create ‘Roux Brew’,  a special ‘house’ beer to be paired with seasonal summertime food for the Michelin 2 starred Le Gavroche, and for Roux at Parliament Square and Roux at the Landau restaurants.

The listing will be guaranteed from April till the end of September, and a competition for a second brew for winter menus is planned for the autumn.

London Brewers Alliance

Out of the 51 breweries in the London Brewers Alliance (LBA), 16 have decided to compete in this inaugural competition. The LBA was formed in 2010 as a collective of London breweries within the M25 to celebrate the resurgence of brewing in London.

Matching beer and food

Le Gavroche was among the first quality restaurants to establish a beer list. This now extends to 17 choices.  Michel Roux Jr is keen to expand that choice and to promote the matching of beer and food in his restaurants.

The beer will be bottled and unpasteurized, and of any style to best accompany Le Gavroche’s summertime menu.

Michel comments: “I am fascinated by flavour and, though I love tradition, I am eager that brewers should really push the boat out with their choice of ingredients.

“I intend take an active interest in the beers, the brewing and the breweries in this competition. And we will be judging the beers blind.”

The beer shall be any strength within the parameters of 4.5% – 7.5%

Judging

The first stage judging is on 26th February at Le Gavroche, and a short list of five beers will be whittled down to a final winner on March 7th at Roux at Parliament Square at an event to be attended by the top five breweries in the competition.

Breweries entering the competition are:

  • Four Pure
  • Partizan
  • Hackney
  • Head in a Hat
  • By the Horns
  • ELB
  • Crate
  • Brew by Numbers
  • Moncada
  • Redemption
  • Fullers
  • Bright Brew
  • London Beer Lab
  • Signature Brew
  • W&E
  • London Brewing Co
