Harris + Hoole, the coffee shop chain with backing from Tesco, were recently reported to have gained alcohol licenses for some outlets – a potentially significant development, but one that a number of coffee shops have undertaken, recognising that evening business in some locations switches from hot drinks.
Nick Tolley, co-founder of Harris+Hoole, has now clarified the position, saying: “The motivation to apply for alcohol licenses for some of our shops came from our customers who were saying that they’d love to be able to enjoy an evening glass of wine or beer in the great environment our shops offer.
“Three of our shops have alcohol licenses – Sunbury, Walton-on-Thames and North Finchley.
“High quality coffee is still our core offering, but we will consider licensing stores on a case by case basis if that’s something our customers are interested in and we feel it’s appropriate for that location.”
