Developing the next generation of hospitality leaders

By James Russell: Developing the next generation of hospitality leaders

February 3, 2014

The hospitality industry offers great career opportunities – with the right skills and attitude, people can progress quicker than in almost any other industry. But this fast-paced nature of careers has its consequences, and research shows that hospitality businesses are suffering from a shortage of management skills.

Over a third (34%) of hospitality and tourism employers report that management and leadership skills in their workforce need improving, while 36% also say that their staff would benefit from training in coaching and motivating others. [1]

The reality is that many hospitality professionals are promoted to managerial positions for their technical skills and the ability to carry out their day-to-day duties – but do they have the right skills to manage, motivate, develop and retain their staff as well as drive profits? What makes an all-round efficient manager?

Book a place at our FREE event at the London City Business Library on Weds 12 Feb to find out how you can give your managers the full range of skills for success

On the back of over 40 years’ experience working with hospitality businesses to develop their staff, The People 1st Training Company has designed a four-day programme that helps managers and supervisors get to grips with the basics of managing a team.

Management 1st gives staff the communication skills and confidence they need to succeed and be effective in their role, and make the transition from team member to manager. Training takes place over a number of months, giving participants the opportunity to try the techniques they have learnt, feed their experiences back to the group and discuss the programme with their line managers.

By the end of the programme, managers will be able to:

  • Understand their own strengths and weaknesses, and use them to their advantage
  • Create a positive and powerful first impression
  • Use communication and listening techniques to manage their team, and build great relationships with managers and colleagues
  • Coach and motivate their team
  • Deal with conflict and give and receive feedback
  • Build their confidence and be assertive
  • Use negotiation and influencing skills to get positive results

Leading brands including Chiquito and Frankie and Benny’s have already reaped the benefits of the course:

“Management 1st has made me more aware of my behaviour, conducting myself as a manager and leading my team. It has helped me get more involved and be more confident in facing difficult challenges. I have put a lot of what I learnt into practice and seen good results.”
Calvin Davids, Manager, Chiquito

Book a place on our next management 1st course, starting 25th March 2014
