Young’s Seafood announces first Fish & Chip Shop

By James Russell: Young’s Seafood announces first Fish & Chip Shop

January 3, 2014

In an interesting meeting of a retail brand with the high street, Young’s Seafood Limited has announced a joint venture with chip shop supremos, The Petrou Brothers whose current shop in Cambridge becomes the first Young’s branded fish & chip in the country, opening at the end of January 2014. It will be the first time that Young’s Seafood has had a branded high street presence.

The refitted shop will be jointly branded as ‘Young’s Fish & Chips, brought to you by the Petrou Brothers’ and will be revamped to feature a distinctive Navy Blue and Red decor to match the brand identity of Young’s Seafood Limited (see above).

Taking a retail brand to the high street

Simon Clarke, Business Unit Director at Young’s Seafood Limited believes that by linking the strength and loyal following of the Young’s brand with one of the most famous names in fish and chip restaurants, makes it an exciting time for the whole fish and chip shop industry:

“At a time when many high street brands are purely focused on creating presence in the supermarket aisles with branded products, Young’s Seafood Limited is also taking our retail brand to the high street with this innovative new venture.  In combining the extensive seafood knowledge and trusted brand strength of Young’s Seafood Limited with the retail and frying expertise of Mark and Pete Petrou, we strongly believe that we have the perfect skillset to make this new enterprise a significant success.”

Good for the industry

Mark and Pete Petrou are widely respected in the industry having won a host of awards including the UK’s number one Fish and Chip shop.  Mark was also recognised for his work earlier this year when he won the Outstanding Achievement Award at the National Fish & Chip Awards.  Mark is similarly thrilled with this latest initiative:

“The involvement of a major retail brand into the fish and chip sector highlights how far the industry has come in the last few years.  We honestly believe that in having Young’s Seafood Limited involved in the sector is a significant achievement and one which can be good for the industry as a whole.”

The revamped shop will feature an extended restaurant as well as take away service and is planned to open in January 2014. As Simon explains, the venture also represents Young’s Seafood Limited’s first venture into supplying Young’s fish direct to the consumer via the fish and chip shop trade:

“Young’s Seafood Limited, responsibly sourced, frozen at sea fish will be used throughout the restaurant, whilst all fish related product such as the fish cakes will all have originated from Young’s fish.  Young’s Seafood’s foodservice business has supplied fish to this sector of the industry for many years and this provides the opportunity to present our seafood directly to consumers on the high street”
