New regulations increasing prizes in pub machines came into effect from midnight on 14 January, and were welcomed by the British Beer & Pub Association, which has long campaigned for the move.
The maximum prize for ‘Category C’ or ‘fruit’ machines rises to £100, which is a welcome boost for the pub trade, says the BBPA. The current prize limit is £70, and the change will help to ensure that machines remain an important revenue stream for pubs.
BBPA Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds comments:
“This is a welcome move, and we have long campaigned for it. It protects machine income so helps pubs, and should also increase innovation and investment in machines, which is largely a UK based industry. And it is good to see another pub-friendly measure from the Government.”
The Categories of Gaming Machine (Amendment) Regulations 2014 will take effect from 00:01 on Wednesday 15 January 2014.
The BBPA has enhanced its Category C Machines Responsible Practice code for pub operators (see here) and will be working with the Gambling Commission and BBPA members to ensure staff are trained, machines are supervised and that they incorporate social responsibility messaging.
