PizzaExpress celebrates with Dough Balls worth £5000!

By James Russell: PizzaExpress celebrates with Dough Balls worth £5000!

January 14, 2014

Joey Essex brings a touch of bling to an otherwise dreary January by posing in gold body paint for the launch of a PizzaExpress competition to win a solid gold Dough Ball worth £5,000.  Joey, a self-proclaimed Dough Ball lover, was painted by acclaimed make-up artist, Natasha Bloom, just a few weeks after leaving the jungle.

Celebrating 45 years – with Golden Dough Balls

Celebrating 45 years of PizzaExpress’ famous Dough Balls, there are two Golden Dough Balls up for grabs.  Joey said, “January’s always really depressing so it’s nice that someone going out for a pizza or picking up some Dough Balls for dinner on their way home might win gold – that would be amazing.”

Top-selling dish

Using the latest 3D scanning technology to create a wax cast, which was then filled with 18-carat gold, the Golden Dough Balls are a far cry from PizzaExpress’ original Dough Balls that joined the menu in 1969.  Invented as a quick snack by hungry pizzaiolos (pizza chefs) using leftover bits of dough, they are PizzaExpress’ top-selling dish. Today, close to 4 million portions of Dough Balls are served in PizzaExpress restaurants every year.

Dough Balls = prizes

One Dough Ball, covered with edible gold, will be found by a restaurant guest before the end of January and will be replaced with the solid gold version once claimed.  Ten other Dough Balls, covered with edible gold, will be found in special packs of Original Dough Balls, available in selected branches of Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, The Co-op and through Ocado.  Each gold-covered Dough Ball found in a supermarket will entitle the winner to a year’s worth of free Dough Balls PLUS one of the ten will be awarded the grand prize – the second Golden Dough Ball made from solid gold.

Parveen Johal, PizzaExpress’ head of communications, said: “The Golden Dough Balls could be found anywhere.  We have restaurants from Aberdeen to St Ives and sell our Dough Balls in almost 4,000 supermarkets in the UK – so everyone is in with a chance of winning.  After 45 years of delicious Dough Balls, there’s never been a better excuse to treat yourself than now.”
