Vince Cable attends York Hoteliers’ Association at Middlethorpe Hall

By James Russell: Vince Cable attends York Hoteliers’ Association at Middlethorpe Hall

December 19, 2013

Middlethorpe Hall will celebrate its 30th anniversary as a hotel in 2014, when director & general manager Lionel Chatard will celebrate 10 years at the helm of the business. Lionel chairs the York Hoteliers’ Association and was recently delighted to welcome the Right Honourable Vince Cable MP, Business Secretary, to an informal ‘Small Business Saturday’ meeting.

At the meeting, key issues were discussed including national tourism matters such as taxes, employment, training & apprenticeship investments, as well as local issues including the York hotel development strategy and traffic restrictions.

Andrew Waller (former Leader of the City of York Council) who helped organise Vince Cable’s visit comments: “It is helpful for York to have someone so connected to the city, having grown up here, at the heart of decision making in Government. Vince wanted to meet people running businesses in York during the afternoon, and he was able to speak to people from a wide range of companies and organisations including the Hoteliers.

“We will be following up the comments on apprenticeships, and steps needed to promote jobs. Evidence on the support needed by lending from banks during the day was very helpful, and Vince will be using this, along with other trips that he is doing outside the “Westminster bubble” to help lever more support for companies to assist the recovery.”

Vince Cable was born in York in 1943 and attended Nunthorpe Grammar School (now Millthorpe School). He stood for Parliament for the SDP in York in 1983 and 1987 and was elected MP for Twickenham in 1997 and has held the seat since then. He was the Chief Economist for Shell before entering Parliament, and has been Business Secretary since 2010.

Award winning Middlethorpe Hall is home to 29 bedrooms showcasing decoration in the manner of the 18th Century. The hotel is furnished with antiques and fine paintings whilst looking out on 20 acres of stunning manicured gardens and parkland.
