Hotel prices in Edinburgh have increased by 360 per cent for New Year’s Eve, according to the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) reported monthly by hotel comparison site www.trivago.co.uk. One night on 31 December will cost an average of £455, compared to the monthly average during December of £99 per night. Edinburgh is renowned for hosting one of the largest New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world, with Hogmanay 2014 welcoming an estimated 80,000 visitors from over 60 countries.

Below are ten destinations with the largest percentage increase this New Year’s Eve, based on the twenty most popular UK and Irish destinations on trivago:

Trivago hotel price index

The trivago hotel price index shows the average overnight accommodation prices for the most popular cities worldwide on trivago. Prices for a standard double room are calculated on the basis of over 2 million daily price inquiries for overnight hotel stays generated through the price comparison service. trivago stores all hotel enquiries for each month and therefore gives an overview of hotel accommodation prices for the upcoming month. The trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) is a reliable indicator of current average prices within the online hotel market: the overnight accommodation prices of 200 online travel agents and hotel chains create the average hotel prices.
