Hotel comparison website Trivago has compiled a list of the 20 best value UK destinations for 2014. The Best Value Index takes into account both hotel prices and hotel reviews to produce a list of hidden gems: lesser known destinations travellers may not have considered visiting before.

Top of the list is North Yorkshire’s Leyburn, a traditional market town above the northern bank of the River Ure, boasting independent shops, pubs and tea rooms and close proximity to the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The trivago Best Value Index combines the trivago Hotel Price Index with the trivago Reputation Ranking to produce an index which takes into account both hotel prices and hotel ratings. Based on over 2 million daily price enquiries and over 82 million hotel reviews from over 200 booking partners, the trivago Best Value Index is the most comprehensive in terms of value-for-money destinations. Included in the list are destinations with at least 25 hotels and 150 reviews.

14 out of the top 20 destinations are located on the coast, suggesting seaside resorts remain a commendable holiday choice in the UK, boasting reasonably priced and highly rated hotels.

The Best Value Index provides a unique overview of the best valued destinations worldwide by using a specifically tailored algorithm that combines the trivago Hotel Price Index with trivago’s Reputation Ranking for hotels. The trivago Hotel Price Index shows the average overnight accommodation prices for a standard double room on trivago. The trivago Reputation Ranking represents the average hotel evaluation, and is based on over 82 million hotel reviews aggregated from trivago and over 200 booking partners that trivago links with. Scaling up to 100, the Best Value Index lists the best combined score on consumer rating and average hotel price.
