The Sky’s the Limit for Zinc

This winter Zinc, a vibrant late night club offering cocktails, dancing and DJs as well as spectacular views over the capital, will launch on the 31st floor of the iconic Centre Point building.

Located on the level below the Paramount restaurant and overseen by General Manager Greg Ballester, Zinc will open Friday and Saturday evenings and is destined to be a hot spot from dusk to dawn.

On arrival, guests enter the stylish reception area and then move into the dramatic bar area.  Designed by the creative and dynamic Studio Wick, features include a ‘snake’ inspired velvet chaise longue winding its ways down one entire side of the lounge, fretwork adorning the walls, cutting edge lighting, and a 10ft Tom Dixon designed bar made from the bar’s namesake, Zinc, with a futuristic panelling design.

The Sun comes out for Arkell’s

After six months of construction, a new 10-bedroom boutique hotel accommodation at The Sun Inn, Coate Water, Swindon has opened for business, and landlord Andy Moss thinks it’s got the best hotel view in town: “We’re right next to Coate Water Park and the new hotel rooms look right over the park entrance. It’s also away from the road so our guests should hear birdsong not car engines as they drop off to sleep.”

Arkell’s Brewery, which owns the pub, has invested well over half a million pounds on the development. Brewery director, George Arkell, said: “There is a growing demand for good accommodation in this part of Swindon which is almost next door to the Great Western Hospital, the Richard Jefferies museum as well as Coate Water Country Park.”

Arkell’s Brewery now has around 500 bedrooms across its estate of 100 pubs and hotels across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire and seriously considers adding rooms to its pubs where there is the space and potential demand.

George added: “The more income-generating opportunities a pub has the better. If we consider that good quality accommodation would be of benefit to a pub and would serve the local community then it’s sensible to make the investment.  The Sun Inn is a busy and thriving pub on the edge of Swindon with plenty going on around it and a very strong local community. It also sits in a large plot with plenty of parking and a new children’s playground. It’s a perfect place for people and we’ve enjoyed watching the new building rise from the ground over the summer months. Perhaps we should call it The Rising Sun.”

Old Cross Hotel offers big opportunity in Wales’ smallest city

Owners looking for a charming and profitable business in Wales’ smallest city have a rare opportunity to get their hands on the Old Cross Hotel in the middle of St Davids. The three star hotel – situated opposite the famous cross in a tourist hotspot in the centre of the city – is on the market with sector specialists Colliers International at £750,000 freehold.

Hotels director Peter Brunt – who celebrated a hat-trick of sales in the principality during the summer – said: “The opportunity to run one of the most charming hotels in this popular tourist location does not come around very often. “The Old Cross fits neatly into the middle market with strictly limited competition. With 16 simple but comfortable bedrooms it’s perfect for the many guests that stay and the popular public areas cater for residents and non-residents alike.”

Accommodation is arranged on ground, first and second floors and includes a comfortable lounge to seat 30 alongside a good sized bar with servery and banquette seating. There is also a restaurant which can seat 50 when laid for a function. The 16 letting bedrooms include eight doubles five twins, two singles and one large family with double plus bunks to sleep a total of 32 guests.

There is no dedicated owners’ accommodation at present but there is a detached building at the rear of the site, currently occupied by staff, that could be suitable for conversion to fit this purpose.

All enquiries should be directed to Peter Brunt, Hotels Director, Colliers International on 0117 917 2000.

The new White Hart, Barnes

The riverside White Hart pub in Barnes has re-opened following a transformation that includes the arrival of a brand new dining room, the Terrace Kitchen. At the stoves is BBC MasterChef finalist Tom Whitaker showcasing the culinary flair that saw the talented chef wow the judges on the cult television cookery show.

Taking advantage of its water’s edge location, The White Hart has wooden balconies spanning the length of the building, with a choice of three terraces for riverside seating. Other highlights include an on-site smokery and the intimate Wren’s Perch – a charming wooden viewing box suspended off The Barn Elms Terrace on the ground floor.

Masterful Food

Head Chef Tom’s cooking for  the Terrace Kitchen and Canon Bar on the ground floor  celebrates the very best of British dishes with a contemporary twist – think wild game, day boat fish, seasonal mushrooms and foraged herbs.

Events at The White Hart

A pub for the people, The White Hart hosts a range of events to suit everyone – from story- time with ‘Coffee and Jackanory’ every Monday morning for parents and little ones, to beer and charcuterie tastings. Wetherspoon pubs nominated for design awards

Harrison Ince Architects have been shortlisted for the Northern Design Awards 2013 for their work on two Wetherspoon pub projects.

The Manchester-based company has been shortlisted in the best restaurant/bar design category for The Smithy Fold pub in Glossop (pictured below) and The Master Mariner pub in New Brighton (above).

Wetherspoon invested almost £3 million developing the two pubs.

The Master Mariner has been built on the site of two former nightclubs. The pub is on two levels with a bar on each. It also features a balcony overlooking the sea.

The Smithy Fold opened on the site of a disused factory building dating back to the early 19th century.

The pub features an open kitchen, exposed stone walls with large factory style windows together with a cantilevered terrace to the rear.

Harrison Ince partner, Kay Brannon, said: “We are delighted that two of our projects for Wetherspoon have been shortlisted for the design awards.”
