What Does Your Chef’s Uniform Say About You?

By James Russell: What Does Your Chef’s Uniform Say About You?

September 12, 2013

In any profession, looking the part is just as important as how good you are at your job. Think of it from your customer’s point of view, who would you prefer to cook your food; a smartly-dressed, hygiene conscious and professional-looking chef, or a plain-clothed, safety-hazard excuse for a cook!

Whilst the likes of Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsey and Heston Blumenthal may have the reputation, fame and prestige to pull off such casual looks, when it comes to your business, image is just as important as the taste.

Food As Good As You Look

A uniform is a symbol of unity. It allows us to associate within our lives. From the plodding policeman, to the shirt and tie of the office, to a tradesman’s overalls, our minds are able to quickly register what profession we are seeing and what next to expect from them.

Those all-important first impressions could be the difference between someone viewing your menu or simply passing by. The importance of a reputable, durable and professional looking uniform could not be highlighted – in any profession – so make sure you acquire the services of a specialist and established chef’s uniform provider, to compliment the great taste of your food.

So What Are The Styles You Could Adopt?

The Classic

The ‘classic’ all-white uniform of the chef is most recognisable when combined with the Chef’s hat. Often displaying the rank of the chef and their team, its pleated and towering structure oozes respect and professionalism whilst practically containing ones hair.

The pure colour of such uniforms is often protected with an apron protecting the user from those inevitable stains and spills.

The Contemporary

Whenever fashion is concerned, there are always new styles, trends and colours, which is why it’s important to move with the times. If your current uniform looks worn, colour-less and dingy, then a fresh new look could be just what you need.

Dark colours with stylish trims tend to secrete a sophisticated and modern approach to cuisine.

The Practical

An essential and sensible aspect of cooking is wearing the appropriate attire. Whether you work in a restaurant or are simply cooking at home, the last thing you want is to create a health and safety hazard.

Baggy and impractical clothing can get caught, droop and get in the way when carrying out cooking procedures. Aprons, protective clothing and proper footwear will ensure that your food is cooked in a safe and hygienic manner.

The Exotic

What mustn’t be lost however, is the fun and excitement that comes from cooking. Your uniform should represent you and the style of food you prepare and perfect. Experiment with colours, styles and trims to find a style that makes people recognise and crave your dishes without even viewing the menu!

Don’t underestimate the power of first impressions. Research your market and find a style that will have punters fighting at the door to taste your delights. You will be surprised at just what your uniform can say about you!
