On the Rack in Medieval London

By James Russell: On the Rack in Medieval London

September 18, 2013

Meiko UK Partner Distributor Whitco Catering & Baking Equipment has recently installed a new Meiko DV200.2PW pass through twin basket capacity dishwasher at The Medieval Banquet at St Katharine’s Dock, a busy banqueting venue, which in summer averages 400–1000 covers a day.

The Medieval Banquet is situated in the beautiful location of Ivory House in St Katharine’s Dock, named after the hospital sited there 900 years ago dedicated to the martyred St Katharine.

The Medieval Banquet is a theatrical dinner experience where diners are treated to over two hours of themed entertainment, including speciality acts, which can include knights, jesters, strongmen, contortionists and magicians with a background of live music and singing. The ticket also includes a four-course Medieval-themed feast with red wine and ale.

With such a large amount of soiled ware to be washed to a consistently high standard, performance and economy were paramount when it came to the selection of a new washing machine for the venue. According to Jeff Whitaker, Managing Director of Whitco: “Both these attributes are expertly combined in the Meiko DV200.2PW machine which provides a high customer benefit in terms of washing end result, combined with both speed and efficiency and these were the factors that dictated why the machine was specified – but primarily the client needed to wash two baskets at the same time. This is an added-value concept that Meiko has been promoting for many years now, since the introduction of the first double-basket pass-through machine some years ago.”

With a high capacity throughput of up to 120 baskets per hour and with a power wash programme, the Meiko DV200.2PW ensures optimum cleaning of even the most heavily soiled crockery, in addition to cutlery, serving trays and containers, kitchen implements, pots and pans and so on. Performance and economy are expertly combined in this model, providing high customer benefit.

Whitaker goes on to explain installation of any dishwasher outside of the dimensions of standard pass through machines, is always demanding, mainly due to their size, but this one had the added complications of a site based in the centre of London, a medieval building, parking restrictions, and the problems of getting the machine down into the cellar. “The old machine had to be dismantled and any large parts were broken down into smaller pieces. The site was cleared, new plumbing and electrics were installed and the new machine (using limited lifting gear) was carefully carried down into place.

“The client is extremely pleased with the high performance and reliability of the Meiko machine. The operators have been close to achieving the specified 120 baskets per hour and they are pleased to have a power wash programme which ensures optimum cleaning of even the most difficult ware such as kitchen implements and pots and pans.”
