Londoners are most likely to go to Covent Garden for a night out and order a pint to unwind after a working week, according to a new poll conducted by One Poll for the premium ale London Pride. The poll shows that when it comes to a night out, Covent Garden is the older person’s choice, while Soho is a favourite with a younger crowd.
Over 23 per cent of the 1,000 Londoners surveyed chose Covent Garden as their favourite area to go out in and over a fifth (21%) of Londoners go for a pint on a Friday night.
Covent Garden was chosen by 39 per cent of those over 55 living in London, in comparison to only 18 per cent of those aged 18-24. A total of 23 per cent of the youngest age group stated their preferred area for partying was Soho, followed by Camden at 18 per cent.
Pint, or white wine, or spirits?
While a pint is the preferred tipple on a night out for the majority of Londoners, 15 per cent choose a glass of white wine and 11 per cent go for a spirit and a mixer.
Londoners conform to gender stereotypes when it comes to drinking, with almost half of men (49%) ordering a pint at the end of a working week and a fifth of women (20%) choosing a glass of white wine.
A pint is also one of the only drinks that remained consistently popular throughout the age groups. Only six per cent of 18-24 year olds in London go for a glass of white wine on a Friday night. This number increases to 14 per cent in the oldest category. Similarly, five per cent of those aged 18-24 select red wine in comparison to 11 per cent of over 55 year olds.
Conversely, rosé wine and cider are more popular with the younger generation, with 9 per cent of 18-24 year olds and 15 per cent of 25-34 year olds choosing rosé in comparison to 4 per cent of those over 55; 17 per cent of 18-24 year olds and 10 per cent of 25-34 year olds select cider with only three per cent of over 55s doing so.
Hot spots
Hot spots for younger Londoners on a night out include Shoreditch and London Bridge. Areas such as Islington, Mayfair, Clapham, Chelsea/Fulham and Greenwich are equally enjoyed by a range of generations in London, whereas Notting Hill and Kensington are more favoured by the older age groups.
London Pride for men, Fortnum and Mason for women!
Londoners were also asked which brand they feel is most associated with the capital. Men chose Fuller’s London Pride, at 24 per cent, and women chose Fortnum and Mason, at 37 per cent.
Wade Crouch, Fuller’s Head of Marketing, has said: “It’s interesting to see that throughout the generations a pint remains the most popular drink. London Pride is iconic and we’ve been particularly forward in highlighting the brand’s provenance and history with our recent advertising campaigns. It’s encouraging to note that beer and ale are remaining in demand despite recent trends in the drinks market such as the rising popularity of cider.”
