Angelus Restaurant has collaborated with the local not for profit cause, Meanwhile Gardens, the community gardens in North Kensington. The restaurant will be purchasing produce grown on the Meanwhile Sky Garden and serving it on its menus, in a bid to raise vital funds for the charity and to inspire its customers and Londoners alike to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The first fruits of Meanwhile Gardens’ labour that Angelus will be serving at the restaurant are some home-grown kiwis, an unusual find in central London, and Angelus’ head chef Joe Howley has created a fabulous Kiwi Eton Mess.

Thierry Tomasin, founder of Notting Hill’s Angelus says; “We are absolutely delighted to forge this partnership. It’s a fantastic chance for us to offer our customers delicious produce grown just a stone’s throw away, whilst simultaneously raising vital funds for Meanwhile Gardens; a cause that I passionately believe in. In addition, this partnership is the perfect way to highlight the real beauty of growing and enjoying your own produce.”

Says Chandrika Dalpat of Meanwhile Gardens, “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Angelus restaurant. They have such a fabulous offering and reputation and we are delighted that they are going to be serving our home grown produce on their menus. It will be incredibly rewarding for our hard-working volunteers to see and taste the fruits of their labour! We hope that this partnership will promote an economical and eco-friendly way of cooking to all those living in London.”

Meanwhile Gardens

Meanwhile Gardens is a community garden that was established in 1976. What was once four acres of derelict wasteland is now a green oasis in densely populated North Kensington, where there is a recognised lack of green space. Meanwhile Gardens enhances the lives of residents by providing safe and inclusive open-air leisure, play, training and educational opportunities.

Almost forty years ago, as crumbling terraces were being cleared, a local resident wondered if this derelict wasteland could become a garden.  Jamie McCullough set about mobilising the local community to make the dream a reality. Westminster City Council, owners of the land at that time, agreed for it to be a garden ‘meanwhile’, until they could develop other plans.

The name stuck, the Gardens grew and prospered.  Today, Meanwhile Gardens is run by a committee of local volunteers, with a small dedicated staff team and a growing team of volunteers.  It is still first and foremost a Garden, because there is even less local public green space than when it was first created.
