Levy Restaurants has created new eating concepts across two of the Science Museum Group’s venues in The North of England. Bespoke restaurants and cafés have been designed at the National Railway Museum (York) and the National Media Museum (Bradford), which appeal to both of the museums’ individual customer demographics.
Maximise customer experience, drive footfall and increase spend
With a brief to maximise customer experience, drive footfall and increase spends per head, Levy Restaurants worked with its longstanding design partner SHH Architects to create outlets in keeping with today’s sophisticated palate and appreciation for architecture. A 12 month review process was overseen by Levy Restaurants Creative Director, Roy Westwood and has culminated in stylish eating destinations that draw on their individual locations.
National Railway Museum
At the National Railway Museum, Levy Restaurants has implemented three different catering areas, The Dining Car Restaurant (pictured above), The Mallard Café and The Courtyard, each designed to incorporate the history of the railway, while reflecting modern design trends:
- The main focus, The Dining Car Restaurant has three different eating environments curated to immerse customers in the UK’s rail legacy, these range from the bistro style of the turn of the century waiting room, the glamour of vintage railway carriages, and the relaxing box car cargo crates.
- Situated in the Great Hall, The Mallard Café draws on its locality to the locomotives in the museum and marries industrial design with an aroma of freshly baked goods.
- The Courtyard is a newly devised outside patio space where Levy Restaurants has kept parallel with the current street food phenomenon, by up-cycling shipping containers to house a pop-up pizza pantry and ice cream parlour.
National Railway Museum offers catering facilities for over 350 guests at any time and experiences a yearly average footfall of 700,000 guests.
National Media Museum
In Bradford, a new café at the National Media Museum has widened the scope of the dining experience within the museum. Previously the café mainly catered during museum opening hours, whereas the new Media Café now remains open into the evening and services a buoyant following of local cinema-goers.
Roy Westwood, said: “Levy Restaurants is focused on creating amazing spaces that appeal to today’s customer and are backed by service levels that go the extra mile and focus on regional suppliers. We understand that it is the museums’ guests that we need to satisfy and therefore spend a lot of time and effort in research and development to make sure that we have a winning formula that will appeal to guests.”
