The London Evening Standard reports that Ian Schrager is coming to London. Schrager is the former owner of some of New York’s most famous hotels and nightclubs – the legendary Studio 54 was his, and he is often credited as the founder of the ‘boutique hotel’ sector.
Now, Schrager is working with Marriott to open a 173-room hotel in the former Berners Hotel in Fitzrovia, not far from the Sanderson.
It will be part of a Schrager and Marriott joint venture that aims to create 100 hotels across the world under the Marriott Edition brand, and the Berners will even have its own nightclub.
Scrager, of course, is eminently qualified to open stylish hotels: he did so until he sold out from his Morgans Hotel Group for a reported $400 million back in 2005.
Jason Atherton to open Berners Tavern
Pollen Street Social chef-proprietor Jason Atherton will be opening his fourth London restaurant – at the Marriott Edition in Berners Street.
Under Phil Carmichael, the restaurant will seat 120, will be called the Berners Tavern, and plans to use the ‘sharing’ concept made so successful by Atherton at Maze when he was working for Gordon Ramsay.
