On 29 August, 1895, 21 northern rugby clubs held a meeting and voted to secede from the Rugby Football Union to set up the Northern Union – which was renamed the Rugby Football League in 1922. That meeting was held in the George Hotel in Huddersfield, which has ever since been known as the birthplace of rugby league.
However, the Grade II listed hotel has fallen on hard times and was closed and placed on the market through Colliers back in January, for offers above £900k.
The future of the building has now been secured: it has been acquired by Dr Altaf Hussain of Northpoint Living Developments for an undisclosed amount.
Dr Hussain intends to restore it – but will be investigating the other commercial or development possibilities that could make the building viable. Northpoint already operates student accommodation, which might be considered.
