Leading food company apetito has joined major grocery retailers, manufacturers and household brands – including Asda, Waitrose, Innocent Drinks, Nestlé and Unilever – in becoming one of the founder signatories of two major environmental agreements for the industry.
Courtauld 3
Launched on 9 May, Courtauld 3 is the latest version of WRAP’s Courtauld Commitment to improve the efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of the food and grocery sector. It aims to reduce waste by 1.1 million tonnes by 2015 – bringing £1.6 billion cost benefits to consumers and industry. To date, 2.3 million tonnes of waste has successfully been prevented by the Courtauld signatories and consumers during the first two phases of the Commitment.
WRAP’s Hospitality and Foodservice Agreement
apetito has also signed WRAP’s Hospitality and Foodservice Agreement, which has recently launched specifically for those who prepare and sell food. As a signatory, apetito pledges to support the Agreement’s target to reduce food and associated packaging waste by 5% and to increase the overall rate of food and packaging waste being recycled, sent to anaerobic digestion or composted to at least 70% by 2015.
“A drive to operate sustainably is at the heart of our business and we take these commitments very seriously,” said apetito Sustainability Manager Mark Lovett.
“As a provider of meals to care homes, hospitals and community meals services, our work falls under the auspices of both Courtauld 3 and the new Hospitality and Foodservice Agreement. As a signatory of both, we’ll continue to work with WRAP to identify ways to reduce waste, improving on measures we already have in place such as our anaerobic digestion facility and providing healthcare and care home customers with reusable crates.”
