Orchid Group has created division-specific electronic documents to help its pub teams get the information they need quickly and easily, helping them run their pubs effectively as well as save money, time and paper.
The pub company has led the way with its comprehensive yet straightforward guidance for staff, and now it is also embracing technology to ensure that information is easy to access by editing its menu specifications into PDFs which can be viewed from smart phones and tablets.
“The new e-manuals represent a step on from paper-based spec books and allow us to make the most of the now common technology of smart phones and tablets,” says Amey Fairbrother, Development Executive for Orchid’s Food Team.
“Rather than printing out the manuals, which run to many pages, for each member of the team, managers can simply email them the PDF so they have the information at the fingertips whenever they need it.
“Moving away from printed manuals where we can is good for productivity, the planet and our bottom line.”
Every dish from starters to desserts
The food specification manuals cover every dish from starters to desserts and include exact ingredient requirements, and become well-thumbed so that it is not unusual for food teams to have to print out several copies over the course of a seasonal menu.
The new PDF manuals on their handheld gadgets mean they can check on specifications quickly and easily through the iBooks app on iOS devices – without even having to leave the kitchen.
